Hundreds of shoppers in the Morayfield Shopping Centre were evacuated this afternoon after an alarm signalled something was amiss.

A gas leak in Big W, caused by the airconditioning, was quickly contained by Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crews.

The Shopping Centre was ventilated and atmospheric testing was conducted before giving the all clear and allowing shoppers to return.

Two people were treated at the scene by Paramedics but did not require hospitalisation.

Police also attended the scene to ensure shoppers were safely evacuated and did not return into the store until the all clear was given.

The gas leak comes just days after residents in the vicinity of the Morayfield Shopping Centre complained of smelling gas.

If residents smell gas in their area, the Moreton Bay Regional Council advises residents to call the Department of Natural Resources and Mines on 13 74 68 during business hours, or 000 and ask for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to investigate.

Road safety a number one priority for Morayfield motorists

Combined-Red-Light-and-Speed-Camera-operational

It has been announced the stationary speed and red light camera at the intersection of Morayfield Road and Devereaux Drive will become operational this week.

The announcement was delivered by Mark Ryan, State Member for Morayfield and Minister for Police and Emergency Services. “The new combined red light and speed camera sites are about improving road safety at intersections controlled by traffic signals,” Minister Ryan said.

“Last year a male motorcycle rider tragically lost his life following a traffic incident on the intersection of Morayfield Road and Devereaux Drive and we are doing all we can to avoid a similar tragedy from happening again.”

“Year-on-year we see too many lives lost on our roads and the Palaszczuk Government is committed to doing all we can to reduce these tragic incidents.”

Mark Ryan MP with  Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating in front of the Road Safety Sign.

QPS Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said advisory signs had been installed at both intersections two months ago in preparation for the new combined cameras.

“The aim of these cameras is to deter drivers from speeding or disobeying red light signals as the consequences of this risky behaviour is known to contribute to road crashes,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

“Speeding and disobeying signals is illegal and dangerous. It is everyone’s responsibility to drive safely.”

“We are urging motorists to travel at the appropriate speed for the conditions and the posted speed limits at all times.”

“Driving through red lights or speeding through intersections is dangerous driving behaviour that can have serious or fatal consequences,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

The installation of the cameras is a joint initiative between the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

Data analysis undertaken by Transport and Main Roads has identified that the intersection is high risk and has a large volume of traffic.

Assistant Commissioner Keating said these cameras would monitor vehicle speeds at all times, not just when the traffic light signal is red.

“Police remain concerned that speed continues to be one of the main contributing factors to the state’s road toll.”

As part of joint Local and State Government preparations for this year’s Severe Weather Season, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Moreton Bay Regional Council are hosting Get Ready workshops.

You are invited to attend a free presentation including sausage sizzle in your community to learn how you can better protect your family and your home for a bushfire, severe storm or flood.

Caboolture-storm-get-ready-queensland

Local fire crews, emergency services and council officers will host the workshop to provide advice about how to get bushfire, storm and flood prepared. Officers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about your property.

Research across Australia has identified that many communities are vulnerable to the damaging effects of bushfires. Even homes that are some distance from vegetation can still be vulnerable to the effects of flying embers from fire. Research has also shown that by taking a few actions early in the season you can greatly increase the chances of your home surviving a bushfire.

You are encouraged to attend your local presentation to help get ready for this year’s Severe Weather Season.

Information provided by Liane Henderson, Acting Bushfire Safety Officer, Brisbane Region, Rural Fire Service, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service in conjunction with Bruce Bunkum, Fire Management Officer, Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Location: Darley Road Park (near the Fire Danger Sign) Caboolture River Road, Upper Caboolture.

Time: 10:00 am

Day: Sunday
